Part 4 - Define & Use A Region - continued.
In VS3D, only one region can exist at any one time. But a region may consist of multiple separate "islands" and holes. Set the "Modify/Define Region" mode to "Spline Lasso". Click the left mouse button on the sculpture grid to start. Enter additional points and then click the right mouse button to finish (and close) the region. A smooth spline curve region perimeter will be fitted to the points entered. Repeat this process to create a new region island in another area of the sculpture grid. Click on the "Remove" button to switch to "Remove" mode from "Add" mode. Enter some spline points inside an existing island. Click the right mouse button to finish. This will cause a "hole" to form in the island. Near the bottom left corner of the window, change the "Feather" setting from "0" to "7". This is the number of grid points across which to feather the region boundary. Move the cursor across the region boundary and note the region containment reported by the "Region out/in" indicator. Set the Region "Z" height value to 1.0 . Select "Plateau" from the "Sculpt" menu. Note how the edges of the plateau are feathered (sloped).

Regions can be applied using some of the same modes available for hammering : equal ("="), plus-minus ("+--"), greater than (">"), and less than ("<"). In addition, regions have a "multiply" ("*") mode. The result is simply the existing surface heights times the region height. This is useful for scaling Z heights into a desired range. Performing a region multiply using a height of -1.0 can be useful for converting an incused (concave) surface to a relief (convex) surface, and vice versa.

Select "Erase Surface" from the main "Edit" menu. Click on "Yes" to confirm. This will set all Z heights in the sculpture grid to zero. Set the "Feather" parameter to 0. Click on "Reset" to erase (remove) the region.

Click on the "Text" region mode button. Click on the "Geometry..." button. The text parameters dialog will appear. In the text window at the top of the dialog, type: VS3D . For text "Height", enter 80. For "Character Spacing", enter 10. Set the grid XY position to 300, 300. Set the font type to "True Type", and pick "Lucian Bold BT" (or a similar font) from the adjacent font list. Click on the "Display" button. Move the text dialog out of the way (but don't close it). Note that the proposed font region is shown on the sculpture grid in blue. In the text dialog, click on "Ok". The text "VS3D" now appears as a region on the sculpture grid. Set the Region "Z" height to -2.0 . From the "Sculpt" menu select "Chisel". The letters are sculpted with the appearance of being chiseled in stone. Click on "Reset" to delete the region.
