Part 4 - Define & Use A Region.
Near the top of the window, click on the "Region" button to switch from Hammer mode to Region mode. A new set of widgets will appear along the left side of the window. Note that the Region Define/Modify mode is initially set to "Freehand Lasso". Click and drag the left mouse button on the sculpture grid to lasso an area - partially overlapping some previous hammer marks. Release the mouse button to finish (and close) the region. When finished, the region outline is drawn with three red lines - similar to the hammer tip. The innermost line is solid, the midway line is dashed, and the farthest extent is dotted. Generally, all three outlines are very close together. If feathering or region smoothing is applied, then the outlines will be farther apart. At the lower left are controls for applying the region to the sculpture grid. set the "Z" height to 0.0 and then select "Plateau" from the "Sculpt" drop-down menu. All of the sculpture grid points within the region are set to a plateau height of zero.

Use the "Hide" and "Show" buttons to momentarily hide and show the region outlines. Move the cursor into the region and note that the "Region" indicator near the top right corner of the window shows the region containment of the point under the cursor. Note that in cases of region smoothing or feathering, it is possible for a grid point to be partially inside the region.

VS3D also applies sophisticated "anti-aliasing" techniques to reduce "stair-stepping" artifacts. This can also result in grid points that are partially inside a region if they lie right at a region perimeter.

Suppose you decide that you didn't really want to do that last sculpture operation. The "Edit" menu near the top left corner of the window has three "Undo/Redo" entries. The first is for undoing/redoing changes to the sculpture grid. The second is for undoing/redoing changes to the region, and the third is for undoing/redoing changes to the warp vectors. Select the "Undo Region Plateau =" menu. Note that the last plateau operation is undone.

Click on the region "Select All" button. Note that, according to the "Region out/in" indicator, all sculpture grid points are fully within the region. Select "Plateau" from the "Sculpt" menu. This has the effect of erasing everything and the surface is now flat again. Click on the "Reset" button to erase (remove) the region.
