VS3D File Menu
1.1.2 Import continued.
"File / Import => Image Brightness as Height (.tif, .jpg, etc.)..." : This will load or merge a pixel image file - with image brightness converted to image height. Several image file types are supported, including Jpeg (".jpg"), uncompressed Tiff (".tif"), Bitmap (".bmp"), etc. After selecting a file, the "Import Pixel Image as Surface Height" dialog will appear. This dialog has 9 settings.
- "Insert Brightness Band on Layer" : This determines which layer to insert the height values on. If the imported image is a color image, this field will have choices for controlling how the Red, Green, and Blue brightness bands in the image are inserted on what layer(s). If the imported image is a gray-scale image, the only choice is what layer to insert the height values on.
-
"Insert Mode" : This setting determines how imported surface heights are assigned to the existing sculpture grid.
"Load" - the entire sculpture grid (all layers) is replaced by the imported data. This is similar to loading a sculpture ".vs3" file (from the "File / Load Relief" menu).
"Overwrite" - the imported data overwrites the current sculpture grid only within the XY coverage extents of the imported data, and only on the layer(s) specified.
"Merge" - similar to "Overwrite" mode, except that the imported data heights are added to the existing sculpture grid heights.
-
"Sizing" : This field determines how image pixels are mapped to sculpture grid points. The default setting is "One Pixel per Grid Point". The other choice is "Resize to Fit", which causes the image to be re-sampled to the current sculpture grid dimensions. The "Sizing" setting has no effect when the Insert Mode is set to "Load".
-
"Image Sampling %" : This value determines if the image is sub-sampled before conversion to surface heights. Normally, this should be 100% (full image resolution). But in cases where the imported image is extremely large, or when it is desired to merge it onto a smaller portion of the sculpture grid, then set the sampling rate at less than 100%.
-
"Horizontal Justification" and "Vertical Justification" : These settings determine where the imported data is merged with, or overwritten on, the existing sculpture grid. These settings only have effect when the Insert Mode is set to "Overwrite" or "Merge". In addition, the justification settings only apply when the "Sizing" mode is "One Pixel per Grid Point".
-
"Flip Image Vertically" : This field determines if the image is flipped top-to-bottom before inserting.
-
"Map Minimum Brightness to Height" and "Map Maximum Brightness to Height" : These fields determine how the brightness levels are mapped to surface heights. The "Minimum" value can be greater than the "Maximum" value. If for example, the imported image has black lines on a white background, then setting the Minimum value to 1 and the Maximum to 0 will result in the lines having a height of 1 above a background height of 0.
