VS3D File Menu

1.1.1 Load/Save Relief.

"File / Load Relief (.vs3)..." : Use this menu selection to select and load a previously-saved relief sculpture file. Any existing sculpture will be erased. This will also load any region that was saved in the file, and it will cause the data coordinate scales to be changed to the values that were saved in the file. If the surface heights on the upper layer(s) are all zero, then the file is more compact (smaller) because those layers are skipped when the file is saved. When a "vs3" file is loaded, the file name will appear in the banner at the top of the main window. If an asterisk ("*") appears at the end of the file name, that means that the sculpture and/or region has been modified since the file was loaded or saved.

"File / Merge Relief (.vs3)..." : This is similar to the "Load Relief" menu, except that the surface heights are added to any existing relief surface (on a layer-by-layer basis). The placement of the merged surface on the existing sculpture grid is determined by the current data coordinate scales and the data scales in the merged file. For example, if the current data coordinate scales range from -1 to 1 (in X and Y), and the data scales in the merged file range from 0 to 1 (in X and Y), then the merged surface will appear in the upper-right quadrant of the existing sculpture grid. If the merged file contains a region, the region is not loaded or merged, and any existing region is unaffected. However, the region in the merged file can subsequently be loaded or merged by selecting "Region => Load Region (.vs3)..." from the main File menu.

"File / Save Relief (.vs3)..." : Use this menu to save the current sculpture and region (if one is defined). This will also save the current data coordinate scales. If the window banner at the top of the main window does not show a filename (the sculpture has not been saved or loaded), then the file selection dialog will appear. Otherwise, the current sculpture surface is saved to the file shown. The ".vs3" files are in a proprietary binary format native to VS3D.

"File / Save Relief As (.vs3)..." : This is similar to "Save Relief" except that the file selection dialog always appears - even if the window banner shows a file name. A confirmation dialog will appear before overwriting any existing file.
